The relationship in Nottinghamshire between Professional and Amateur Golfers dates back to early in the 20th Century when The Amateur & Professional Golfers' Alliance was founded on the 9th December 1921.

At the first meeting in 1921 Mr H D Snook, the first President, kindly consented to give a cup to be competed for annually. That Presidents Cup is still played for today.

The primary object of the pioneers of the 'Alliance' was to provide over the winter months competitive golf at an inter-club level. It was one of the aims of the promoters to encourage a closer association between the Amateur and Professional ranks not only by including the Professional in the Club's Team but also inviting him to share in the executive work of the Alliance.

The association of Amateur and Professional in competitive Alliance golf has undoubtedly raised the standard of play and the co-ordination of the activities has achieved much in establishing and consolidating the interests of both Amateur and Professional.

In 1960 a Strokeplay Tournament for the Professionals was introduced, the first winner being David Talbot.

At a meeting in 1965 at Mapperley Golf Club attended by a number of Professionals - George Bell, Mike Busk, Roger Hastings, Ken Milner, Harold Roffe, Don Smart, David Snell, David Talbot, Maurice Youngs and Bill White -  the Nottinghamshire Professional Golfers Association was founded to further promote the interests of PGA qualified Professionals and Assistants whilst continuing to maintain a link with the Amateur ranks. The Officers elected at this meeting were President - J A Small, Captain - Maurice Youngs, Secretary - Mike Busk.

The Notts PGA Strokeplay Championship was augmented in 1965 by the introduction of the Notts PGA Matchplay Championship which was won for the first time by David Snell.

Over the years the Notts PGA has grown in stature and now promotes each year a Strokeplay Championship, a Matchplay Championship, an Assistants Strokeplay and Assistants Matchplay Championship.

In addition each year twenty Notts PGA Professionals/Assistants qualify to play in the Nottinghamshire Championship where they compete against the top twenty Amateurs from the County - further cementing the relationship developed over the years.

The Nottinghamshire PGA maintains an Order of Merit each year. The Professionals/Assistants being awarded points based on their performance not only in the Championships but also in a series of twelve Pro Am's organised throughout each year.

A record of the Notts PGA Champions, the Nottinghamshire Champions and the winners of the Order of Merits over the years can be found on this page together with the names of the Officers of the Notts PGA.
